We pride ourselves in being the most unbiased, inclusive, and accessible pregnancy and parenting community in the United States. Before we move forward with a formal partnership, we want to ensure that we’re aligned in a few key areas.

Being Unbiased means that we know there is no hierarchy of parenting choices or birth outcomes. For example, we do not promote unmedicated births over medicated births or midwives over obstetricians. At Birthsmarter, we believe that families should have the highest quality of support that’s right for them. This means we do not give blanket advice or tell people what to do. We do not make assumptions or lecture on best practices. We can share personal experience, community anecdotes, and / or evidence-based resources, while recognizing that one size will never fit all! We want to make sure people feel seen, heard, and supported - NOT pressured or shamed.

Being Inclusive means welcoming all individuals and family structures while recognizing that Black, brown, Queer, fat, disabled, and financially limited individuals and families 1. exist and 2. might have unique needs. This, specifically, means that we do not assume we’re only speaking to cis-white-thin-upper-middle-class-married-women. To communicate our inclusivity, instead of leaning on gendered terms like “mamas” or “papas” we default to neutral terms such as “pregnant people” or “partners.” While we might reference “women” or “dads” specifically, doing so should not be the only term used in that particular context. We recognize racism and implicit bias in the birth community and work to unpack our own biases and limitations as leaders in the field.

Being Accessible means meeting people where they are! We offer an alternative pricing policy to make sure every family can access Birthsmarter regardless of their economic status, provide closed captioning in virtual classes, offer classes in multiple formats and have designed a curriculum with an eye forward different learning styles.

Our Core Values

We <3 Good Science

Do we teach “evidence-based” classes at Birthsmarter? YES! However, we have some beef with the term and want to raise the bar. We don’t believe the parenting-pendulum should swing, ad nauseam, based on the latest study. GOOD SCIENCE places current research in the context of evolution, biology, and history. We balance the latest findings with critical thinking and common sense in order to make recommendations about how to get you and your family off to the best start.

We Care That You Learn

Between driver’s ed and professional development seminars, we’ve all been trained to cautiously approach obligatory learning. Here’s the thing: with all this birth stuff, your actions can greatly influence your outcomes. In order to make informed decisions when it matters, we need you to be able to retain and recall critical information. So we present curated information alongside the HOW and the WHY, and we do it without PowerPoint. Also, we really value your time. It’s not worth it for us if class is super boring either.

We Teach To Move You Forward

The way we see it: you’re sitting on A Pregnant Opportunity. When done well, preparing for birth and parenting invites you to try on habits that can positively affect your personal growth and development, across all facets of life. All of our classes plant seeds to move you toward a healthier body, a balanced mind, and a resilient relationship.

We model best practices

Childbirth, parenting, and for-profit businesses are inextricably linked in today’s world. We believe a future exists where success in business does not come at the expense of human labor or environmental protection. We are proud to advocate for small and large social, political, and economic changes that will improve the lives of families and protect the future of our planet. We know that the best way forward is to practice what we preach. As a business, we are dedicated to treating employees with respect and dignity, paying for and valuing peoples’ time. We are working to build a culture of mutual respect and participation between and among our employees.
